Dzukou Valley, Valley of Flowers of the East

Dzukou Valley, which is also called the Valley of Flowers of the East, is a magnificent natural treasure that is found on the border between the states of Nagaland and Manipur in India. Famous for its natural beauty, blooming flowers, and diverse fauna, the valley is a must visit paradise for trekkers, nature lovers, and photographers.



1. Location and Geography:

- Dzukou Valley is situated between Senapati district of Manipur and Kohima district of Nagaland in Northeast India.

- It has been established at an elevation of 2,438 meters above the sea level, behind the Japfu Peak in the state of Nagaland.

- The valley is watered by two meandering streams: the rivers Dzukou and Japfu which often turned into a river of ice in winter.


2. Flora and Fauna:

Dzukou Valley is famous for its natural sceneries, seasonal flowers and various inhabitants such as birds and animals.

- The valley is full of colorful blooms of lilies, aconitum, euphorbia and rhododendrons of many colors. It is these flowers that cover the valley floor to form a spectacular vista. Here and there, the valley becomes so full of flowers that standing on the ground is like walking in a cloud.

- The valley supports the population of animals and plants, becoming an oasis for nature lovers.


3. Trekking to Dzukou Valley:

- Dzukou Valley trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the North East India; even though it's a difficult one and has no facility.

- The journey commences from Viswema Village, which is located 25 kilometers from Kohima. Public sumo services are function between Kohima and Viswema Village.

- The motorable road that measures 8 kilometers (both ways) is enclosed by sub-tropical evergreen trees and silver ferns. There are night shelters along the way for overnights.

- From there, It's a extremely steep hike of about 3-4 kilometers which follows stone-carved steps up until the apex point of Dzukou Valley. The stone-carved path and greenery show this pathway with all the beauty it harbors.


4. Iconic Beauty:

- Dzukou Valley reminds me of a fluffy lawn carefully mown and its carpets of rolling hills reminding of flowers in bloom from far. It is hard to put into words the beauty of Everest. People go there though just to appreciate the view, so its popularity is understandable, so to speak.
